Welcome to the WTA

Wally GatorWelcome to the Walterboro Tennis Association (WTA). I thought I would take a few minutes to let you know who we are and what we do as an association.

Membership: We have roughly 130 active members from all over Colleton County and the Lowcountry. Our dues are $10.00 per year and go mostly to cover the cost of minor items around the Forest Hills courts and some nominal support for WTA member teams that play USTA Team Tennis in the Charleston Low Country Tennis Association (LCTA) Leagues.

Organization: The officers are Buddy Creech, John Waddell, Lynn Murdaugh, Stewart Goodwin, Patty Lohr, Tom Lohr and I. We have no particular duties or responsibilities other than Lynn keep up with our bank account. Our only goal is to promote tennis play in the Lowcountry. We function somewhat like a parents association that supports and promotes children’s sports leagues. However, in our case, we support our own participation in area tennis activities.

League Play: Participation in the women’s and mixed doubles leagues is very good with as many as six teams per league in the spring, summer and fall seasons ranging from 2.5 to 3.5 and sometimes 4.0. However, the men’s teams are not nearly as well organized and fielding only a couple of teams each season. We also have Mixed Doubles and Combo teams for men and women that have a high participation rate.

Other Stuff: We would like to see the number of planned tennis events for Colleton County in the five or six range each year. Right now, we are at two events.

We have a Social Committee that is trying to put on a fun evening event with hot dogs or hamburgers and a little tennis each month usually on a Friday evening. However, the extreme cold has set us back for a few weeks. I anticipate the next event will be planned during the month of March.
Once again, let me welcome you to the WTA and Lowcountry tennis. If we can be of any assistance to you, please let one of us know. Also, I have extra keys to the restrooms at the Forest Hills courts. They are available to members for $1.00. I have been known to give them away for a hardship case in a moment of weakness. See me or email me if you want a key. In an effort to avoid vandalism, please be responsible for locking the restroom if you unlock the door.
